Ms. Anderson offers several workshops to groups who are interested in learning about African American and southern history through hands on learning. If you have a group that is interested in doing a workshop at the museum, please contact Ms. Anderson to schedule a time to come and do the workshop with your group.
WORKSHOPS
Quilting:
Participants will leave this workshop knowing the foundations of quilting and walk away with their own quilt square. Through this hands-on experience, participants will learn about the history of quilting in the lineage of Ms. Anderson’s mother, Marie Anderson, and grandmother, Minder Coleman. Fabric, thread, and needles will be provided.

Indigo Dying
Participants will learn the history of indigo as a major crop and its various uses by Indigenous and enslaved peoples historically and into the present day. Participants will gain skills in the indigo dye process and leave with an item of their choosing that they dyed during the session.

Lye Soap Making
Anderson will guide participants in learning the historical art of lye soap making. Enslaved people, particularly women, often made lye soap using animal fat as way to produce a cleaning material on site (rather than having to purchase soap) and as a means of putting all accessible resources to use. Participants will learn how to make lye soap and choose from a variety of natural fragrances to scent their soaps.

Chair Caning
Participants will learn the rare art of chair caning with seasoned local artists. Participants will gain foundational skills in chair caning, learn the history of the artform, and leave with a small stool that they caned themselves. This workshop is only available in the Fall.

Seasonal Art Making
Participants will have the opportunity to learn from Anderson, an artist who works across multiple mediums, to make their own art relevant to the season. Examples include: making angels from repurposed materials for Christmas, and wisteria vine crosses for Easter.

Foraging
herbal medicines, natural dyes, teas and berries
Anderson has a special expertise in learning the ways that wild plant life can be used for a variety of purposes across the seasons. In this workshop, participants will l1earn how to forage and harvest natural herbs, plants, berries and other seasonal flora for teas, dyes, and berries as well as health benefits of these natural resources.
